Grant Writing Course
In partnership with the Investigative Medicine Program and the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation OPSSD offers a grant writing program led by Eugene Shapiro, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology, Deputy Director of the Yale Investigative Medicine Program, and Co-Director of Education for the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Scholar Award (CTSA) Program. Offered each semester, the course, which focuses on K and R01 grants, is led by experienced faculty from multiple departments. The course includes didactic sessions on grant review criteria, budget development, rigor and reproducibility, presentation of preliminary data, construction of specific aims, and other topics. In the first two-thirds of the course, participants are asked to draft and revise grant sections, so that they have a working draft by the last one-third of the course. Grant sections undergo iterative peer review leading up to a mock study section conducted by content experts at Yale with a summary sheet generated for grant revision. Participants report that the paced grant writing approach enables drafting, critique, and revision, and that peer and course leader feedback strengthens their application prior to mock study section review which, in turn, identifies areas for improvement well in advance of NIH submission deadlines.
