Yale Cancer Center embraces a tradition of research into novel cancer therapies, multi-disciplinary treatment, and quality care. A National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center for nearly 50 years, Yale Cancer Center is one of only 56 such centers in the United States and the only one in Connecticut. Cancer patients are treated at Smilow Cancer Hospital and its network of 15 Connecticut facilities by multi-faceted clinical teams collaborating to ensure that every patient’s treatment plan is personalized and well managed. Smilow Cancer Hospital is accredited by the Commission on Cancer, a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, and recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) with a Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) certification.

A world leader in care, research, and education, the Yale Cancer Center’s more than 300 members deliver transformative scientific discoveries and care innovations that bring us all closer to a world free of cancer—one patient at a time. Most recently those advances have included immunotherapy and cellular therapies, as well as cutting-edge treatments available through YCC’s Clinical Trials program. Many breakthroughs are fueled by the cancer center’s six research programs and members, who have produced 2,422 total publications in the past five years (2018-2023), generating new data, new discussions, and new outcomes to meaningfully improve the course of cancer care.

The collaborative partnership between the Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital means that research innovations are translated into treatments, which provide data that informs future discoveries. The progress of translational medicine, which contributes to the cancer center’s reputation as a national and international leader in the field, remains a primary focus as does continued efforts to remove obstacles to patient access and addressing health care disparities in our communities.

If we pay attention to our patients, we learn so much about what to pursue in our research and how to provide the care in clinic. We can provide the best care today and learn how to make it ever so much better in the future—that’s what drives me to build an even stronger cancer center and programs at Smilow that focus on patient experience.
