Two professors from the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) recently participated in the National Academy of Medicine’s (NAM) Emerging Leaders Forum in Washington D.C. Nicole Deziel, co-director of the Yale Center for Perinatal, Pediatric, and Environmental Epidemiology and associate professor of epidemiology (environmental health sciences), and Amy Bei, assistant professor of epidemiology (microbial diseases), were nominated by Dean Megan L. Ranney, MD, to attend the forum on April 16 and 17.
The invitation-only event is a cornerstone of NAM’s mission to recognize and engage early- and mid-career professionals who have shown exceptional promise, achievement, and leadership in health policy, health care, biomedical science, and related fields. Through panel discussions and other events, the forum provides a space for experts and professionals in both the medical and public health fields to explore some of today’s most pressing challenges in health and medicine with a goal of stimulating collaborative interdisciplinary solutions.
“I found it motivating to hear how other scientists and leaders are adapting to and pioneering transitions in biomedical science and was heartened to be in fellowship with so many other researchers committed to integrity, equity, and action in the health sciences.” Deziel said. “While the challenges facing public health are daunting, I left with a renewed sense of purpose.”
Some of the topics discussed at this year’s forum included climate change and its impact on health, artificial intelligence, social justice, and drug pricing. Dean Ranney participated in a panel discussion about “Trust in Science.” Through these events, the attendees gained insight into new perspectives across the various fields represented at the forum.
