Biography
Pat Jackson Allen joined the faculty of Yale School of Nursing in the Spring of 2003 to teach in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty. Prior to coming to Yale, she taught at the University of California, San Francisco and was director of the Advanced Practice Pediatric Nursing Program there for over 10 years. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Connecticut, training at Yale New Haven Hospital, where she worked on the adolescent unit upon graduation. She then obtained her Master's Degree in Maternal-Child Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco and 15 years later, her certificate as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.
Her area of professional scholarship focuses on the primary care needs of children with chronic health conditions. She co-edits a major textbook, Primary Care of the Child with a Chronic Condition, and the fifth edition was published in 2010. Her current research interest is in the role development and advanced practice functions of recent pediatric nurse practitioner graduates, tracking their expanding practice into specialty care, both inpatient and outpatient.
In addition, Pat Jackson Allen has taught extensively on the PNP role in Britain, China, Japan, and the Philippines. For the past four years, she has led the traditional Chinese Medicine course for YSN students at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

- Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hong KongChina 2013As part of an ongoing collaboration between the YSN and Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Nursing (HKPU), YSN faculty and students travel to Hong Kong for 10 days of clinical experiences in nursing, the health care system, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The focus of this program is the integration of TCM and "western medicine" in clinical practice. HKPU is a leader in the development of nurse-run Integrative Care centers and TCM centers in Hong Kong. Activities includ
- Pediatric Health CareManagua, MN, Nicaragua 2008Professor Patricia Jackson Allen leads a team of Yale School of Nursing students and faculty to Managua to provide health care for children at La Escuelita. In addition, the team is able to collect data on the children's health and living conditions, using this information to plan for the subsequent year. Several international presentations and papers have already resulted from this work.
- Pediatric NursingChina; Japan; Philippines 2008Professor Patricia Jackson Allen is an internationally recognized expert in the advanced practice pediatric nursing role. Her expertise has led her to be sought for consultation, including recent work at Aomori University of Health and Welfare, Japan; work for the private nursing review company Center for Excellent Review Strategies, Philippines; and consulting with Hong Kong Polytechnical University on establishing a nurse lead clinic in a hospital for pediatric care.
